Wow... what a story. I didn't know people were taking HL so literally. Sad to hear some have died over the loss of a character. It reminded me of the late 70s when some kids were killing themselves after dying (character wise) in the popular game Dungeons & Dragons. It is really upsettig to know that some people are taking this program environment so seriously. I guess that is the crazy world we live in. Good story to think about Julie.

Very interesting that one could become so attached to something that is not real. With all of this virtual reality are we letting our minds play tricks on us and losing the ability to determine what is real and what is not?

I've been to the Second Life world of C.S.I. New York and it is pretty cool. The TV show "the Office" has a set up in SL as well but I have not seen that one.

This scares me. IT'S NOT REAL! Sorry to shout but can't understand becoming that attached to something I made up in the first place. This could lead to a whole new realm psychological study. Who knows maybe one day I'll go to my virtual shrink to help me get over the lost of my virtual dog glitch. God I hope not.

Hey there! I was also reading about it and wondering why it is that our brain is better off integrating illustrations and narration (w/o background sounds) than with animations. I once hear din a Neuroscience class that 30% of our brain is devoted to seeing. One would wonder why audio has such a strong effect when we are better wired for seeing than fro hearing. It definately has to do with rducing the cognitive load but I wonder how it really works.

Take care! Good lick w/ your revised lectures..

I agree that when it comes to teaching concepts, less is better. Students don't tend to do well with information overload.

Well, while everybody is interested in new technologies or virtual world thing, it is kind of scary to think about future. My middle school showed a presentation at the beginning year basically telling teachers technologies are moving forward and scientists have invented [or will have this done soon]some kind of machine that can think better than humans. Then shift happens...

We, teachers, lose our jobs, or maybe we become technicians behind these machines or sub teachers for these machines when they have glitches.:)

Our school has lost two teachers in the last couple years to teach in satellite school settings. These are similar to VR classrooms, but the students use web-cams instead of Avatars. I can see the web-cam going away and VR classrooms creeping in over the next 10-15 years. The satellite school idea seems to be taking off for kids with disabilities, traveling families, etc. I like the satellite school concept, but not sure about the VR classroom. Even when kids can't attend a regular school, I feel their visual self needs to be seen. We read so much from our students based on their reactions and facial expressions.

That reminds me when my sixth grade teacher had one of my classmates bring in their Super Nintendo and we played Sim City. I had never even heard of it. I think it was just for fun and can't see any educational value in it. I know that I would be frowned upon if I did that in my classrooms. Games can be used as long as it meets the objectives of the classroom. As teachers, we can't just play games to play games.
